What Are Composite Fillings (White Fillings)?
Composite fillings (white light fillings – composite restorations) use a halogen or LED light source to harden the composite materials used in white fillings. This composite material is a polymer that realistically mimics enamel and which easily adheres to the teeth.
Composite Fillings Are Used on Which Teeth?
- On teeth with cavities or to replace amalgam (a mixture of silver, tin, zinc, copper and mercury) fillings.
- On cracked or chipped teeth.
- To treat gaps between teeth.
- On worn or sensitive teeth.
- For minor reshaping.
Who Are Composite Fillings Not Suitable For?
- Those who require a substantial amount of work on the front teeth.
- Those whose teeth have suffered a lot of mass loss.
- Those who consume a lot of tea, coffee or cigarettes.
In such cases porcelain laminates, inlay or crowns are more preferable.
Do Composite Fillings Require Teeth to Be Etched or Cut?
No.
How Long Do Composite Fillings Last For?
Composite Fillings achieve very successful for patients who consume limited amounts of tea, coffee and tobacco. These fillings last for 6-7 years provided they are polished once a year. They can be repaired should they crack, chip or stain by removing only the affected area and reapplying composite material and hardening it.
